Health & Safety Specialist Role Summary:
The Health and Safety Specialist will lead and support all aspects of health and safety across their operations. From managing WSIB claims and return-to-work planning to facilitating Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) activities, inspections, training, and compliance, the Health & Safety Specialist will help foster a safe, compliant, and engaged work environment.
This is a hands-on role ideal for an OHS professional passionate about people, processes, and continuous improvement, with the resilience and professionalism to work effectively with supervisors, managers, and employees at all levels.
Health & Safety Specialist Primary Duties & Responsibilities Include:
- Manage and enhance company-wide health and safety programs and procedures.
- Facilitate JHSC activities, including organizing meetings, inspections, and follow-ups.
- Oversee WSIB claims management, including timely reporting, documentation, and return-to-work coordination.
- Investigate and document incidents involving workplace harassment and workplace violence, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and internal policies.
- Facilitate return-to-work processes, including modified duties coordination and accommodation planning.
- Provide support for attendance management processes and Short-Term Disability (STD) applications.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
- Support or deliver safety training, onboarding, and awareness initiatives.
- Conduct and coordinate Respiratory Fit Testing for Production Associates.
- Maintain accurate H&S records, reports, and compliance documentation.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation.
- Collaborate with team members at all levels to promote a proactive safety culture.
- Develop, coordinate, track, and deliver H&S-related training sessions.
- Engage daily with supervisors and managers to address health and safety issues, providing coaching, guidance, and accountability.
- Build trust and credibility with leadership while managing challenging conversations.
- Support supervisors in coordinating with external consultants and service providers.
- Support investigations of workplace harassment or violence in accordance with company policy and legislation.
- More relevant roles as needed.
To be considered for this role, the “Health & Safety Specialist” must have the following qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- 1–4 years of experience (or equivalent education and experience) in Health & Safety or HR, ideally in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, WSIB procedures, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to remain resilient, adaptable, and professional when dealing with high-pressure situations or resistance to change.
- Strong conflict-resolution and influencing skills, with the ability to hold supervisors and managers accountable to H&S standards.
- Ability to take initiative and collaborate effectively across departments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
