Environmental Compliance Coordinator Role Summary:

The Environmental Compliance Coordinator, reporting to the Environmental Manager, is responsible for environmental compliance activities (70–75% of the role) and health and safety responsibilities (25–30%), providing an excellent opportunity to gain experience and develop professionally in both disciplines.

Environmental Compliance Coordinator Primary Duties & Responsibilities include:

Compliance Management

  • Support the Environmental Manager in implementing and maintaining environmental compliance programs across the corporation’s properties and projects.
  • Maintain registers for permits, approvals, compliance obligations, deadlines, inspections, and commitments.
  • Assist with preparation, review, and submission of environmental notifications, regulator correspondence, reports, and follow-up items.
  • Track compliance-related deliverables from internal teams and external consultants.
  • Escalate environmental risks, overdue actions, and non-compliance issues promptly.

Environmental Monitoring and Site Support

  • Coordinate routine and non-routine site inspections, field observations, and monitoring activities.
  • Support programs related to groundwater, stormwater, surface water, landfill condition monitoring, erosion control, leachate-related activities, site housekeeping, and general environmental protection measures.
  • Assist with field documentation including logs, site photos, maps, inspection forms, and monitoring records.
  • Support response coordination during spills, fires, dust or odour complaints, slope or erosion issues, and other environmental events.
  • Help ensure environmentally sensitive infrastructure and regulated areas are identified and protected during field activities.

Brownfield and Redevelopment Support

  • Support environmental work associated with the company’s landfill and brownfield assets, including closure planning, post-closure considerations, remediation support, and redevelopment readiness.
  • Assist with collection and organization of technical information for site assessments, permitting, closure strategies, capacity reviews, soil management initiatives, and redevelopment studies.
  • Coordinate site access, field logistics, and document control for environmental consultants and technical specialists.
  • Support internal project teams with environmental inputs related to land use transition and site redevelopment planning.

Consultant, Contractor, and Stakeholder Coordination

  • Coordinate environmental tasks assigned to external consultants, laboratories, contractors, and service providers.
  • Track scopes, schedules, deliverables, action items, and reporting requirements.
  • Support communication with regulators, municipalities, utilities, adjacent landowners, and emergency responders where required.
  • Participate in project meetings, field meetings, and consultant check-ins as needed.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Compliance with work hours and location agreed upon in the employment contract.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the company’s health and safety protocols.
  • Environmental permits, approvals, and submissions tracked and supported on schedule.
  • Compliance obligations maintained accurately and actioned on time.
  • Site monitoring and inspection records are current and audit-ready.
  • Consultant and contractor deliverables are coordinated efficiently.
  • HSSE incident documentation and follow-up actions are complete and timely.
  • Environmental and safety risks are identified early and escalated appropriately.
