Role Summary:
As the Health and Safety Director, you will lead and direct the company’s health, safety, and crisis management strategies, ensuring compliance with provincial and federal requirements while fostering a proactive safety culture. You will develop long-term, sustainable health and safety programs tailored to the heavy industrial sector, driving continuous improvement across all levels of the organization.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Strategic Leadership in Health and Safety (H&S):
- Develop, implement, and manage the company’s health and safety strategy, aligning it with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the development and maintenance of a robust safety culture across all operational sites, fostering employee engagement and commitment to safety practices.
- Collaborate with senior management to ensure health and safety initiatives support business objectives.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure full compliance with federal, provincial (BC), and local health and safety regulations, including WorksafeBC standards, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, and environmental laws.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies, managing inspections, audits, and reporting requirements.
- Monitor legislative changes and update safety policies and procedures accordingly.
- Risk Management:
- Conduct risk assessments, hazard identification, and job safety analysis (JSA) across all industrial sites.
- Implement and oversee risk mitigation strategies to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses.
- Ensure emergency response plans and crisis management systems are in place and regularly updated.
- Training and Development:
- Oversee the creation and delivery of health and safety training programs, ensuring all employees, contractors, and stakeholders are well-versed in safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Ensure continuous education and development of the H&S team and key personnel, maintaining a high level of competency in safety practices.
- Incident Investigation and Reporting:
- Lead investigations of workplace incidents, near-misses, and accidents to identify root causes and develop corrective actions.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of all incidents to regulatory authorities and internal stakeholders.
- Track and analyze safety performance metrics, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
- Contractor and Subcontractor Management:
- Establish health and safety standards for contractors and subcontractors, ensuring alignment with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Review contractor safety programs, conduct site audits, and ensure proper safety oversight during all phases of work.
- Budget and Resource Management:
- Manage the health and safety department’s budget, allocating resources to ensure effective program implementation.
- Oversee procurement of safety equipment, tools, and technologies, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Safety Audits and Continuous Improvement:
- Implement regular safety audits, inspections, and performance reviews across all locations to ensure compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop a continuous improvement framework for health and safety processes, fostering innovation and the adoption of best practices.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work closely with unions, employees, and management to promote a collaborative approach to health and safety.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the board of directors and executive leadership on safety performance, risks, and initiatives.
- Sustainability and Environmental Health:
- Integrate environmental health and safety practices into operational processes, ensuring sustainability goals align with safety initiatives.
- Lead efforts to minimize environmental impact, focusing on pollution control, waste management, and resource conservation.
Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, the “Director – Health & Safety” must have the following qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification in health and safety (e.g., CRSP, CSP) is highly desirable.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in health and safety management, preferably within the heavy industrial sector.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing health and safety systems, policies, and standards in a complex operational environment.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and standards applicable to the industry.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and influence at all levels.
- Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on risk management and continuous improvement.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to travel
