Job Summary:
Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the environmental health & coordinator will primarily be responsible for designing, developing, implementing and championing the Environmental Health and Safety program within Matalco.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Health & Safety
- Identify, assess, and inform leadership of internal and external HSE issues that affect the operation. Recommend and implement action plans and solutions;
- Monitor HSE legislation, regulations, directives, by-laws and trends from external agencies, assessing impact and recommending changes in programs
- Communicate with members of the public and representatives of external agencies (WSIB, MOL, MOE, etc.);
- Oversee, coordinate and/or participate in inspections, investigations, audits, and other assessments to identify hazards and control or eliminate them;

- Coordinate testing and evaluation of new, replacement or substitute materials, clothing and safety equipment to ensure proper application and compliance with safety standards.

- Oversee and participate on the Joint Health and Safety Committee, attend meeting and follow-up on action items;
- Review Accident/Incident Reports to ensure investigations are effective, root causes are identified and appropriate corrective actions are followed-up on;
- Facilitate orientation and safety training for all new hires.
- Participate in investigations, accident reporting and administering return-to-work
Environmental
- Develop and communicate procedures for storage, usage, shipping, monitoring and disposal of regulated materials or substances.
- Coordinate monthly reporting to environmental agencies;
- Co-ordinate waste removal, as needed
- Monitor, collect and analyze a variety of samples (e.g. air, noise, dust, etc.), as required;
- Assist with investigations and responses to complaints from the public.
- Review Spill Reports to ensure spills are properly contained and cleaned up, investigations are effective, root causes are identified and appropriate corrective actions are followed upon.
- Recommend practices for reducing, recycling, and reusing waste to reduce costs and environmental impact;
To be considered for this role, the occupational health and safety coordinator must have the following qualification:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or related field required
- Recognized Ontario H&S training/certification preferred (i.e., JHSC Part 1 & 2, First Aid & CPR)
- Knowledge of the Ontario H&S Act and Industrial Regulation required
- Minimum 1-3 years of experience within a hot metal casting or similar manufacturing environment.
- Self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work with different levels of management
- You are a highly visible and active leader.
