An Overview of the Role :
Reporting to the Divisional HSE Manager, the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager is responsible for providing leadership to the HSE Advisors and support for their HSE management system. This includes advice and consultation; coaching and facilitation; incident investigation and injury management; as well as necessary reporting and record-keeping. This is primarily a field-based position with the potential for travel.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide advice and consultation for programs supporting corporate strategy for strong safety performance and continuous improvement.
- Investigate processes and support management with the collection and tracking of safety-related metrics.
- Provide timely advice and documentation to facilitate investigations.
- Manage injury claims and handle regulatory reporting associated with those claims.
- Assist with safety-related training delivery.
- Coordinate and prepare HSE documentation commonly used by business units.
- Design and create site- or project-specific safety plans as required.
- Assist with strategic initiatives to support client interface.
- Analyze field safety conditions and recommend changes to improve safety performance.
- Maintain records to comply with laws and regulations.
- Prepare and submit compliance and non-compliance reports.
- Assist supervisors with audits and inspections of operational activities.
- Review existing safety systems and recommend improvements as required.
- Identify plans to reduce hazards and organizational risks.
- Provide guidance on safety systems, trends, investigations, and health and safety regulations interpretation.
- Participate in programs and initiatives to sustain a safety-first culture across employees and contractors.
- Ensure all employees understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
- Support graduated training program development as needed.
- Ensure COR and ISO audits are completed on time.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree/Diploma/Certificate in Health and Safety, or equivalent training and experience.
- 8+ years of Health & Safety experience.
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating ability to perform responsibilities.
- Railroad and/or construction sector experience preferred.
- NCSO, CRSP or other related designations preferred.
- Knowledge of federal, provincial health, safety regulations, and related strategies.
- Familiarity with provincial safety and worker’s compensation legislation.
- Experience with COR and management system auditing.
- Field safety auditing and investigation experience.
- 3-5 years site-based safety management experience.
- Independent, self-motivated, team player and leader.
- Critical thinker with strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Sense of urgency and focus on timely delivery.
- Attention to detail.
- Strong coaching, training, interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
