Role Summary:
Under the direction of the President & CEO, this position will lead the strategic execution and continual improvement of our Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Program throughout the organization. This pivotal role involves ensuring the seamless integration of all corporate safety policies, procedures, work instructions, and training initiatives. Your primary objective will be to drive excellence in safety standards while leading the ongoing evolution of our HSE Program within the company.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Primary duties and responsibilities include:
- Oversee the comprehensive administration of our safety program, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Take charge of accident investigations, conduct analyses, prepare detailed reports and summaries, and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Ensure timely submission of pertinent safety reports as per regulations and organizational standards.
- Prepare detailed descriptions of unsafe conditions and proactively implement corrective measures and mitigate risks.
- Develop and maintain a safety equipment purchase program to ensure ongoing compliance and optimal workplace safety standards.
- Oversee the accurate and timely completion of safety inspection reports on equipment.
- Design, facilitate, or support Health, Safety & Environment seminars, training sessions, and ongoing education programs, including approved first aid training courses as needed.
- Stay updated on the latest safety literature and legislative developments to ensure compliance and inform best practices.
- Engage in hands-on collaboration with Safety Committee members and representatives, participating in ongoing safety activities, attending safety committee meetings, and
fostering a culture of continuous improvement in Health, Safety & Environmental practices. - Serve as a key point of contact and liaison between the organization and regulatory bodies such as OH&S, WCB, and MHSA.
- Participate in OH&S inspections to address safety concerns and ensure compliance.
- Manage the company’s WCB claims program, ensuring timely processing and resolution.
- Provide expert Health, Safety & Environmental guidance, and advice to all levels of management, serving as a trusted advisor across the organization. Rev 4 25-March-2024 HR-SG-021 Page 2 of 2
- Ensures that company HSE and maintenance records are properly maintained, and concerns are communicated to all levels of management and the safety committee.
- Effectively advocate for ongoing improvement in Health, Safety & Environmental performance by promoting a culture of continuous enhancement and risk mitigation.
- Effectively promote and secure buy-in for the Safety Program by persuading employees and implementing necessary actions.
- Adheres to the company’s life rules policy and code of ethics.
- Provide Health, Safety & Environmental guidance and direction to all employees as needed.
- Ensure the effective administration and enforcement of all established Health, Safety & Environment policies.
- Oversee departmental activities and projects, ensuring accountability for individual safety performance among staff.
- Provide comprehensive information, instruction, and hands-on support to supervisory staff, empowering them with a deep understanding of accident prevention strategies and relevant occupational health and safety legislation to ensure the health and safety of all employees.
- Conduct regular worksite tours to observe and document Health, Safety & Environmental practices and identify any potential issues or concerns.
- Review safety inspections and provide actionable recommendations.
- Review monthly and annual safety records and statistics.
- Set and achieve annual Health, Safety & Environmental goals, and objectives.
- Effectively communicate Health & Safety messages to the workplace.
- Participate in the safety disciplinary process as needed, in collaboration with the Human Resources Department, ensuring adherence to established protocols and standards.
- Drive continuous improvement and innovation in the Health, Safety & Environment program, ensuring its alignment with industry-leading practices and forward-thinking initiatives.
- Demonstrate accountability for the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Health, Safety & Environment policies, and procedures, conducting regular inspections and audits to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Oversee the company's fleet management operations, ensuring that fleet management files are diligently maintained with updated Driving Abstract Records, Drivers Authorization Forms, and Valid Driver’s Licenses.
- Oversee and administer the training program, as well as maintain Training Matrix records.
- Support the quality policy, scope, and objectives of the quality management system (QMS)
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Postsecondary education in an environmental or related field. Equivalent experience will
be considered. - 5+ of experience in heavy industrial sectors.
- Proficient in analytical problem-solving and adept at making informed decisions.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and motivate employees at all levels of the organization.
- Knowledgeable about the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Code as it pertains to manufacturing facilities.
- Experience conducting safety audits, inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, and developing corrective/preventive action plans.
- Proficient in diplomacy, facilitation, and effectively persuading both management and workers.
- Display creativity and innovation, striving to cultivate the optimal safe working environment.
- Knowledge of best practices for hazard identification, safety training, and emergency response planning.
- Ability to lift parts, materials, and/or products weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Successful completion of a level 1 Fit for Work Exam – an evaluation of flexibility, back fitness, strength, and cardio.
