HSE Field Advisor Role Summary:
Reporting to the Safety Manager, West, the HSE Field Advisor is responsible for providing expertise and support for their HSE management system. This includes providing advice and consultation; coaching and facilitation; incident investigation, program development, project start-ups and injury management, and any necessary reporting and record-keeping. This is primarily a field-based position (80%) with 20% administrative responsibilities. Travel away from home is required and determined based on operational needs.
HSE Field Advisor Primary Duties & Responsibilities include:
- Have a working knowledge of British Columbia legislation.
- Develop and implement comprehensive project plans, including task breakdowns and risk assessments.
- Analyze safety conditions (primarily field-based) and recommend changes to continuously improve operational safety performance.
- Actively perform field safety and compliance audits, inspections, and observations with personnel that are either directly or indirectly involved in track protection activities.
- Assist supervisors with their audits and inspections of operational activities.
- Participate in the incident investigation of all HSE-related incidents and near misses at supported locations, utilizing formal tools to identify the root cause and develop appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Collaborate with the Injury Management Coordinator on the management of occupational injuries, illnesses, and Modified Work Plans.
- Provide advice on safety systems, trends, response actions, investigation, and interpretation of health and safety regulations.
- Assist with the preparation, maintenance, and submission of records as necessary to comply with relevant corporate programs, laws, and regulations.
- Coach and mentor field personnel in the application and best practices of CN and CP railway rules.
- Prepare and perform internal and external audits for COR certification.
- Other duties as required.
To be considered for this role, the “HSE Field Advisor” must have the following qualifications
- Degree, diploma, or certificate in Health and Safety, or equivalent training and experience.
- A professional designation, NCSO or CRST, or willingness to work toward it.
- Understanding of health and safety practices.
- Railroad and/or construction experience.
- Injury investigation experience.
- Experience with COR.
- 5+ years of advisory experience.
- Independent, self-motivated, team player and leader.
- The ability to work away from home for extended periods of time.
