Role Summary:
The Safety Director is responsible for leading the development and implementation of safety
standards, maintaining COR certification, and overseeing staff training and competencies. As
the organization’s safety advisor, the role ensures compliance with regulations, investigates
incidents, and drives corrective actions. The manager also maintains safety procedures,
supports driver training and recruitment, and contributes to operational excellence through
effective risk management systems.
Safety Director Primary Duties & Responsibilities Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Develop, implement, and maintain best-in-class safety standards through modern safety
techniques, rules and regulations, and instructions to ensure that staff are fully trained
and briefed. - Maintain COR certification.
- Establish a system to record, monitor and train all operating staff on their vocational
skills and competencies. - Compile project records and provide site specific safety plan submissions.
- Operate as the key functional expert and advisor on all aspects of safety and best work
practices while meeting industry demands, new trends and company culture. - Ensure team members consistently receive timely, responsive, and accurate functional
advice. - Incident Management: investigate accidents, operating incidents, and dangerous
occurrences to determine causes, establish trends and transferable lessons, then advise
remedial action and ensure implementation and follow through. - Responsible to monitor trend data and KPI’s through regular checks and balances,
ensuring compliance with systems, processes and procedures, and regulations is
achieved and maintained. - Lead the production of a management system to ensure that all operational
competencies and risks are assessed and monitored to ensure compliance with all
legislation and regulations. - Responsible for checking, writing, updating, and implementing safety processes and
procedures. - Organize and facilitate worker trainings, presentations, and maintain records for such.
- Build, manage and coach support staff for driver training, driver management and
recruiting - Other duties as required
To be considered for this role, the “Safety Director” must have the following qualifications:
- Completion of a degree in Engineering, NCSO, or a related discipline OR a combination
of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent. - Self-starter who takes the initiative to set and achieve pertinent objectives and goals.
- Business professional with highly developed interpersonal skills with the proven ability
to engage, motivate and lead. - Significant demonstrated expertise and experience in a safety-oriented leadership role.
- The ability to influence decision makers and the front-line worker mentality and
behaviour. - Experience in construction, transportation, and/or rigging an asset.
- Extensive expertise in risk assessment and accident investigation, recreation, and
review. - Strong knowledge of all legislation and regulatory rules and procedures.
- Accredited or otherwise qualified to assess construction, transportation and/or crane
and rigging operations. - The ability to communicate ideas, thoughts and new concepts in a way that motivates
and engages staff. - Ability to foster a positive team culture that encourages others to contribute and form a
commitment to actions.
