Role Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Education and Training, the Safety Officer conducts worksite safety audits, delivers safety training, develops communication and instructional materials to support member CSOs and crew safety training, fosters collaboration and sharing of best safety practices among members, provides OHS support for the organization and provides back-up for instructors.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Specific duties and responsibilities include

  • Conduct worksite safety audits in various locations across around the lower mainland as well as a couple of trips each year through other regions of the province as required.
  • Coordinate / schedule the association’s instructor safety audit participation
  • Ensure the timely delivery and relevance of safety training courses
  • Establish resources to support the association’s member CSOs and crew safety training
  • Foster collaboration and sharing of best safety practices among members
  • Provide back-up for instructors to reduce scheduling conflicts and mitigate the impact of occasional instructor absences.

Auditing Workplace Safety:

  • Be familiar with all aspects of the Worksite Safety Audit (WSA) program
  • Review and recommend revisions to the WSA process and reporting tools
  • Conduct WSA site visits, document observations and communicate findings with impartiality
  • Prepare and present reports

Training:

  • Be familiar with construction industry safety training and certification courses
  • Be familiar with safety training components of both Roofer and Architectural Sheet Metal Worker apprenticeship technical training
  • Deliver safety training as required to internal and external audiences including apprentices attending technical training programs.
  • Create, develop, and refine lesson plans, training activities, and assessment tools as required
  • Prepare and deliver educational seminars and webinars
  • Instruct classes for roofing industry safety training and components of technical training programs as required
  • Provides safety orientations and identifies health and safety hazards

Administration:

  • Maintain accurate records
  • Ensure staff safety certifications are regularly reviewed and maintained
  • Work with instructors to maintain all aspects of security, safety, and housekeeping/cleanliness of the training centre facilities
  • Facilitate compliance with occupational health and safety guidelines

Other:

  • Remain current with all roofing/construction industry processes and practices with a particular emphasis on safety
  • Plan and implement OHS policies and programs for the association staff and facilities
  • Assist in curriculum design, development, evaluation, documentation and revision, as required
  • Be flexible to work evenings and weekends as part of the total workload, when required
  • Performs other related duties as required.

To be considered for this role, the “Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Site Supervisor ” must have the following qualification:

  • Experience as a CSO or similar role
  • Excellent knowledge of the followings are ideal
    • Hazardous materials and practices related to EPDM, BUR, Mod Bit, PVC, asphalt shingles, cedar shake and shingles, concrete tile, metal roofing and flashing are ideal.
    • WorksafeBC legislation
    • National Torch Safety Program
  • Preferred qualifications: Construction Safety Officer Certificate o Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation (ideal)
  • Roofer Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement (ideal)
  • Instructor’s diploma or equivalent (ideal)
  • Valid BC Drivers’ license
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal background check

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years working in the construction industry with demonstrated progression of responsibility and at least 2 years in a safety leadership role
  • Training or instructional experience preferred
  • Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office required
